The "Hometown Hello" campaign, which urges Western New Yorkers to sign huge greeting cards for U.S. troops, got under way Thursday.
Signatures and donations of specified sundry items will be collected at 16 local Valvoline Instant Oil Change locations. The items will be airlifted from Niagara Falls Air Reserve Station to troops serving in Iraq.
The first to sign were members of the Buffalo Bills, who took part at the Valvoline location in Orchard Park.
The campaign is sponsored by the Air Force Reserve's 914th Airlift Wing and the New York Air National Guard's 107th Air Refueling Wing, Valvoline Instant Oil Change and the Buffalo Bills Network.
