VETERANS ARE HONORED; I-86 STRETCH DESIGNATED

The 48-mile section of Interstate 86 in Cattaraugus County was designated Cattaraugus County Veterans Memorial Highway Wednesday at the Allegany River Rest Area here. Officially, the road will continue to be known as I-86.

The ceremony also included an awards presentation honoring 10 veterans from Cattaraugus County and neighboring counties.

The New York State Medal for Merit was given to Vicky Lynn Orcutt, Robert J. Metler Jr. and Claude F. Glenn, all of Olean; Hanford L. Cooper of Allegany; Frank Morris Swartz of Jamestown; and Harry G. Buddinger of Belfast, who also received several other service medals.

The Navy Combat Action Badge was presented to Harold E. Dougherty of Limestone. High school diplomas were given through Operation Recognition to Douglas V. Young of Scio and Joseph Kwiatkowski of Allegany. A Distinguished Service Medal and other medals were given to Donald Scharf of West Valley. The New York State Distinguished Service Cross was given posthumously to Jacob E. Walton of Olean.
