I read in The News that Galyan's in the Walden Galleria has been taken over by Dick's. That reminded me of Bass Pro Shops, which government officials have been courting in the hopes that they will set up shop in downtown Buffalo.
I am totally against using millions of taxpayer dollars to try to lure what amounts to a rather generic yet giant tackle shop with sporting goods when this area already has plenty of these types of stores. I visited a Bass Pro shop in Florida and was not impressed.
What happens if Bass Pro builds its downtown store, mostly at taxpayer expense, and then goes out of business because of economic factors? I could see that happening, and downtown would be left with yet another eyesore.
Our local and state leaders, while at times well-meaning, have failed us. We desperately need change. Perhaps the Senecas should be given a part of downtown Buffalo. Look how quickly they built an attractive casino in Niagara Falls with exciting, live entertainment and amazing food. Soon a giant landmark hotel will open. I say give a part of downtown Buffalo to the Senecas and watch them transform it into a bustling, better place.
