The men's soccer season ended Sunday for the University at Buffalo and Canisius.

UB lost to Akron, 4-1, in a semifinal match of the Mid-American Conference playoffs in Kalamazoo, Mich. Canisius' hopes for a place in the Metro Atlantic Athletic Conference playoffs were dashed when Rider wrapped up the fourth and final place with a 2-1 win over Marist.

Freshman Lee Catchpole scored the UB goal, his third of the tournament. Jeff Martinko assisted. Akron will host the MAC championship game this weekend against Western Michigan.

UB finished its season with an 8-8-2 record.

Canisius (5-11-1, 4-4-1 MAAC) had stayed alive for a berth in this weekend's conference playoffs with Saturday's 2-1 win over Niagara but needed Marist to defeat Rider on Sunday to extend its season. Instead, the final playoff berth went to Rider (5-13, 5-4).

WOMEN'S VOLLEYBALL: Canisius (10-15, 3-5 MAAC) was swept in three games at Loyola in Baltimore. Christine Wildes had 18 kills and Kim Hoffman added 15. Lauren Lackovich had 40 assists for the Golden Griffins, who lost the last two games, 32-30 and 30-28.

WOMEN'S HOCKEY: Buffalo State (2-2) was unable to take advantage of 12 power plays and lost to visiting Cortland, 4-2. Jessica Thieme and Jamie Overbeck (Kenmore East) scored for the Bengals, who led, 2-1, early in the second.

MEN'S HOCKEY: Canton scored five unanswered goals in the third period, four on the power play, to defeat Erie Community College, 7-3. Alex Gadzich scored a pair of goals and Brian Meyers tallied one for ECC (1-2).
