Nichols School won its second New York State Association of Independent Schools (NYSAIS) championship in a row in boys soccer Sunday, defeating Riverdale School of New York, 1-0, at St. John's University in Queens.
Joe Walter scored on a penalty kick in the 18th minute for Nichols after teammate Kyle Winnick had been pulled down in the box. Bob Shuttleworth recorded his 48th career shutout, making seven saves.
It was the third appearance in the NYSAIS finals in three years for Nichols, which finished its schedule with a 19-2-1 record.
GIRLS SOCCER: Hackley School of Tarrytown finished an undefeated season by defeating Nichols, 4-0, in the championship game of the NYSAIS playoffs at St. John's University. Hackley scored two goals in each half as it went to 23-0 for the season. Nichols closed at 14-7-1. Liz Koelmel had an outstanding defensive game for the Vikings.
FIELD HOCKEY: No. 1 seed Rye Country Day made its first half lead stand up and went on to a 2-1 win over No. 3 seed Nichols School in the championship game of the NYSAIS playoffs.
Nichols scored first on a goal by sophomore Lauren McDermott, her fifth of the tournament, but Rye scored twice before the first half ended. Hannya Boulos assisted on the goal for Nichols, which finished the season with a 14-7-2 record.
