In a meeting held a few weeks ago with consultants and the Senior Citizens Board, West Seneca Town Supervisor Paul Clark and the Town Board decided to take the Community Center away from the community. The issue was never put in front of the community for discussion.
The West Seneca Community Center, a very large room with several smaller rooms, is in the rear of the West Seneca Senior Citizens Center. At the request of senior citizens, town officials are taking this huge area and turning it into a fitness facility for seniors. As a senior, I applaud others for wanting to stay physically fit and active. But they already have an entire building to themselves.
There are many clubs and organizations that will be displaced because of this decision -- the Polish Heritage Dancers, Kickin' Rhythm Cloggers, Downhome Country Cloggers, West Seneca Youth Theatre and a few others. All of these organizations provide wholesome activity for children, teens, adults and seniors. It would be extremely difficult, if not impossible, to continue as organizations if this space is taken from them. They have been asked to vacate by Jan. 1.
I urgently ask all West Seneca residents to petition Clark and the Town Board to rethink this decision so that these valuable community organizations are not displaced.
