King of the Hill

A new season begins for the animated Hill family as Peggy (voice of Kathy Najimy) visits her parents in Montana, bringing along Hank and Bobby (voices of Mike Judge and Pamela S. Adlon), in "A Rover Runs Through It." Peggy tries to resolve issues with her mother while Hank strives to prove his manliness to the neighbors. Guest star Henry Winkler voices his cartoon likeness. American Dreams

Helen (Gail O'Grady) barely can think of anything or anyone except JJ (Will Estes), who is listed as missing in action in Vietnam, in the new episode "What Dreams May Come." Seeking answers about JJ's fate, Jack (Tom Verica) goes to Washington, D.C.; Meg (Brittany Snow) accompanies him for reasons of her own. Talk show host Tavis Smiley guest stars as U.S. Supreme Court Justice Thurgood Marshall; singer Alanis Morissette also guest stars. (TVPG) HDTV3620

Cold Case

The strangling of a girl prompts Lilly (Kathryn Morris) to reinvestigate a similar 1989 crime in the new episode "The Sleepover," directed by actor Emilio Estevez. The first victim attended a slumber party, and the host's brother is arrested for the present-day homicide -- but his confession adds new wrinkles to the case. Daveigh Chase, one of the voices in Disney's "Lilo & Stitch," guest stars. HDTV1216, 40638

The Simpsons

It's not unusual for this show to air its annual Halloween episode after trick-or-treat time, thus the late arrival of the new "Treehouse of Horror XV." Ned Flanders (voice of Harry Shearer) gets a head injury that yields the ability to foresee other people's fates; miniaturized Maggie takes a fantastic voyage into Mr. Burns' innards; and Lisa and Bart (voices of Yeardley Smith and Nancy Cartwright) become sleuths pursuing a serial killer. The Lord of the Rings: The Fellowship of the Ring

The first chapter of director Peter Jackson's screen trilogy, based on the long-revered J.R.R. Tolkien saga, has its network-television premiere. Frodo (Elijah Wood) and his companions begin their perilous trek to destroy the powerful, evil ring by taking it to Mount Doom. The enormous cast also includes Sean Astin, Viggo Mortensen, Ian McKellen, Liv Tyler, Cate Blanchett, Billy Boyd and Ian Holm. (TVPG) HDTV87769991

The School of Rock

After earning respectable if not spectacular box-office returns with such movies as "Shallow Hal," actor-musician Jack Black scored an out-of-the-park hit with this clever, engaging 2003 comedy. He plays a spirited (of course) rock band member-turned-substitute teacher who loosens up a fifth-grade class and makes it the hippest music act around. Co-stars include Joan Cusack, Sarah Silverman and the film's writer, Mike White. HDTV59651649

NFL Football

There's a fine line between winning and losing in the NFL, a fact new Browns quarterback Jeff Garcia has frustratingly experienced this fall. The former 49er recently said Cleveland's offense is simply missing chances at big plays, turning potential touchdowns into field goals or less. That lack of execution could prove fatal tonight against Ray Lewis and the Baltimore Ravens, whom the Browns figure to battle all season long in the AFC North. HDTV685129
