"A Moment Like This" is the theme of the 2004 Debutante Pageant and Ball, a biennial fund-raiser sponsored by Gamma Phi Omega Chapter of Alpha Kappa Alpha Sorority, to take place Nov. 27. Forty-one young women will be participating in a two-part program that embraces African and Western rites of passage into womanhood.
The pageant will be held at 2:30 p.m. in the Center for the Arts on University at Buffalo North Campus. Admission is $5 and tickets are available at the UB Center for the Arts box office, all Ticketmaster outlets, Ticketmaster.com or charge by phone at 852-5000.
The dinner, ball and awards ceremony during which the young women will be presented to the Western New York community will take place at 6 p.m. in Adam's Mark Hotel. Tickets for this event are $40 and include pageant admission. They may be purchased between 5:30 and 6:30 p.m. Mondays and Wednesdays at the YWCA at 190 Franklin St. All tickets are available through Nov. 15.
Gina Mayo-Hawk and Ingrid Johnson-Jacobs are chairwomen of the event. In 2002 the event raised more than $20,000 for scholarships. Dawn E. Sanders is president of Gamma Phi Omega Chapter, founded in Buffalo in 1944 as a branch of Alpha Kappa Alpha Sorority, which was established in 1908 at Howard University as the first American Greek-letter organization for black college women and was incorporated as a perpetual body in 1913.
