Phone company SBC Communications says it expects to cut 10,000 or more jobs -- 6 percent of its work force -- by the end of next year through a combination of layoffs and attrition.
SBC announced the cuts in a filing Friday with the Securities and Exchange Commission.
SBC, which is based in San Antonio, said the newly announced cuts would come on top of its elimination of about 7,000 jobs in the past year primarily through "normal attrition."
SBC has more than 50 million phone lines in 13 states. A company spokesman, Larry Solomon, said the job cuts "will be across geographies and across business units."
SBC has been losing phone lines as customers replace traditional phone lines with cellular phones and voice-over-Internet service.
