With the kidnappings of foreigners in Iraq, many people demand that Muslims around the world condemn these actions. Well, they have -- Lebanon's the Daily Star, the Turkish Press and Albawaba, to name a few. But few of our media wish to report it. Much of our media also portray these kidnappings as directed solely at foreigners, when in fact most of the kidnappings have been of other Iraqis. Both of these situations are a result of the U.S. inability to provide security for the country.
Linking the idea that Islam somehow promotes this issue and that the insurgents are fervent Muslims is similar to thinking that the Vietnamese were fervent Communists. In both situations, insurgents are simply fighting the United States, which is making things worse. I thought this country learned the lesson of Vietnam -- that you can't impose a government on a people by killing them -- but I guess it didn't.
