FORMER OFFICIAL ADMITS DEFRAUDING BANK

The former assistant vice president at the Salamanca branch of Cattaraugus County Bank admitted Friday that he defrauded the bank out of more than $100,000.

Richard C. Fitzgerald, 46, of Machias, pleaded guilty to bank fraud before U.S. District Judge Richard J. Arcara.

Assistant U.S. Attorney Gretchen Wylegala said Fitzgerald admits he repeatedly skimmed money from loans that he approved for customers in 2000, 2001 and 2002. She said the bank now has more than $2 million worth of loans in default because of Fitzgerald's activities.

The FBI investigated the case.
