BICYCLIST STRUCK BY TRUCK IN ST. CATHARINES, ONT.

A 78-year-old St. Catharines man was seriously injured Thursday when he was struck by a truck after apparently riding his mountain bike through a red light on Geneva Street, Niagara Regional Police reported.

Police said the man was bicycling south on Geneva in rain at about 9:45 a.m. He entered an intersection at the Fairview Mall entrance, despite a red light, when a 1999 Ford truck, owned by a local courier company, collided with the cyclist.

The victim was taken by ambulance to Hotel Dieu Hospital in St. Catharines and later transferred to Hamilton General Hospital.

The 25-year-old male driver of the courier vehicle was not hurt, police said.

Any witnesses are requested to contact the Niagara Regional Police Service Reconstruction Unit at (905) 945-2211, Ext. 5500.
