Jennifer Capriati (left) survived a scare from Meghann Shaughnessy, winning, 4-6, 6-3, 6-4, to advance to the quarterfinals of the Advanta Tennis Championships in Villanova, Pa.

Shaughnessy was dominant on serve early on and had a clear upper hand in winning the first set. But the fourth-seeded Capriati took control halfway through the second set, breaking Shaughnessy to go up 4-3 and then winning the next two games.

Third-seeded Maria Sharapova also advanced when Jelena Kostenic was forced to retire in the third set because of a strained groin.

In Paris, Andy Roddick surged into the third round of the Paris Masters with a 6-2, 6-2 rout of Armenia's Sargis Sargsian in his first match since late September.
