PIETRAK LEADS NARDIN TO FOURTH TITLE

Katie Pietrak led a 1-2-3 Nardin finish, and the Gators won the Monsignor Martin Association girls cross country championship for the fourth straight year Monday over a 3.1-mile course in Delaware Park.

Pietrak, the runner-up last year to teammate Caitlin Higgins, who has since graduated, finished in 19 minutes, 30 seconds, only one second in front of teammate Meg Battin and four in front of another Nardin runner, Jill Shea. Nardin's Caitlin English was fifth, Jessica Hamm was eighth and Amalie Sandstrom was 10th.

Kerry Hurley of Sacred Heart was fourth.

Nardin had 19 points in the team scoring. Mount Mercy was next with 51. The Thunder was led by top-10 finishes by Leah Murphy (sixth), Jenna Szczepanski (seventh) and Morgan Walsh (ninth). Pietrak, Battin, Shea and English of Nardin, Hurley of Sacred Heart and Murphy and Szczepanski of Mount Mercy made first-team All-Catholic for their top-seven finishes. The eighth through 14th finishers earned second-team honors.

FIELD HOCKEY: Melissa Hock's goal off an assist by Jackie Reed with 6:21 left in the first half gave top-seeded Iroquois a 1-0 win over Eden despite a great performance by Raiders goalie Kerry Brogan.

"She must have turned back at least 25 shots," said Pete Tonsoline, coach of the Chiefs (16-2-1). "It was the best goalie performance against us all year."

Natalie Souder needed just two saves for her fifth shutout of the season as No. 2 seed Pioneer topped Medina, 7-0. Fammie Griffith, Rahel Wilson and Lauren Murphy were the goal scorers for the Panthers (15-2).

Emily Warren scored four goals and Meghan Meier tallied twice for No. 3 seed Amherst in a 6-1 win over East Aurora.

No. 4 seed Roy-Hart edged Niagara-Orleans League rival Newfane, 2-1.

Iroquois will face Roy-Hart and Pioneer will oppose Amherst in the semifinals Thursday at Veterans Park in Medina.

GIRLS VOLLEYBALL: No. 1 seed St. Mary's of Lancaster swept three games from Cardinal O'Hara in the Monsignor Martin quarterfinals. Carly McNeill had 14 kills and Stephanie Kramer had 15 assists for the Lancers. . . . No. 2 seed Nardin won three straight games from Niagara Catholic as Emma Richards served five aces and had five assists and Kelly Martin had six kills. . . . Leanne Malone had 16 kills as No. 4 Mount Mercy (12-7) defeated Mount St. Mary, 3-0. . . . Sarah Belliotti had 22 digs and three aces to lead No. 3 Sacred Heart over Holy Angels in three straight games.
