Most local candidates in Cattaraugus County are unopposed in Tuesday's election.
Aldermen will face off in only two ward contests in each of the county's two cities, Olean and Salamanca. Only two of the 13 towns -- Conewango and Randolph -- have races.
In Olean's Ward 1, incumbent Glenn R. VanDixon (R,C) is seeking a second term, challenged by Karen M. Young (D,I). In Ward 5, two newcomers, Jane E. Northrup (R,I,C), and Richard J. Bean II (D, Average American Party), are vying for a seat. Incumbent Jennifer Fairbanks-Black chose not to seek another term. Ward 3 Alderman Raymond L. Wangelin (R,I,C) is unopposed.
In Salamanca, Teri Oles (R) and Harold Kahm (D) face off in Ward 1; Marsha K. Painter (R,C), Jud M. Hager (D), in Ward 2. Judge William H. Mountain III (D,I,C) is unopposed in his bid for another six-year term on City Court.
In Conewango, voters will choose a councilman to fill a one-year vacant term. Ronald D. Adams (R) faces Russell A. Abbott (New Direction).
Randolph voters will select one town justice from two candidates: Susan K. Cobo (R) and Gary H. Archer (D,I,C).
The following are the unopposed candidates in county races: County Treasurer Joseph G. Keller (R,I,C); County Coroner Bradley M. Spink (R,I,C) of Olean.
In town races, these candidates are unopposed:
Allegany -- Joseph A. Wolf (D,C) for a one-year term as councilman.
Ashford -- Richard R. Preston (R) for town justice.
Carrollton -- John F. Schoonover Jr. (R) for town justice.
Farmersville -- Jennifer S. Holmes (R) for town justice.
Freedom -- Warren G. Schmidt (R,I,C) for a three-year term as councilman.
Great Valley -- Roy A. Arena (R) for a one-year term as supervisor; Gary W. Howe (R,I,C) for a one-year term as councilman.
Ischua -- Sandra L. Keenan (R) for a three-year term as town assessor.
Machias -- Matthew S. Bull (R,I) for a three-year term as town councilman.
Perrysburg -- Michael J. Wesley (R) for Town Justice.
Persia -- Harry R. Ackley (R) for a three-year term as councilman.
