MOST CANDIDATES UNOPPOSED IN ELECTION

Most local candidates in Cattaraugus County are unopposed in Tuesday's election.

Aldermen will face off in only two ward contests in each of the county's two cities, Olean and Salamanca. Only two of the 13 towns -- Conewango and Randolph -- have races.

In Olean's Ward 1, incumbent Glenn R. VanDixon (R,C) is seeking a second term, challenged by Karen M. Young (D,I). In Ward 5, two newcomers, Jane E. Northrup (R,I,C), and Richard J. Bean II (D, Average American Party), are vying for a seat. Incumbent Jennifer Fairbanks-Black chose not to seek another term. Ward 3 Alderman Raymond L. Wangelin (R,I,C) is unopposed.

In Salamanca, Teri Oles (R) and Harold Kahm (D) face off in Ward 1; Marsha K. Painter (R,C), Jud M. Hager (D), in Ward 2. Judge William H. Mountain III (D,I,C) is unopposed in his bid for another six-year term on City Court.

In Conewango, voters will choose a councilman to fill a one-year vacant term. Ronald D. Adams (R) faces Russell A. Abbott (New Direction).
