Positive attitude ...
Halle Berry rarely speaks of her battle with diabetes. But the actress, who takes insulin shots daily, told the crowd at last weekend's Carousel of Hope benefit in L.A., "My teacher told me at the age of 10 that when I grew up, I was going to be given a gift. Diabetes turned out to be it. It gave me the strength and toughness I needed for my life."
Applauding the Oscar-winner were Oprah Winfrey, Jay Leno, Faith Hill, Josh Groban, Rod Stewart, Beyonce, Warren Beatty and Annette Bening, Michael Caine and Ivana Trump (who had the winning bid for a $70,000 Mercedes).
Julia hospitalized ...
A pregnant Julia Roberts was hospitalized over the weekend after experiencing a series of early contractions, reports People magazine.
The actress was accompanied by her husband, Danny Moder, when she was admitted to an undisclosed hospital. The contractions eventually stopped, but she remained under observation.
Roberts' New York-based publicist, Marcy Engleman, declined to comment.
The movie star, who turned 37 Thursday, is expecting twins -- a boy and a girl -- in early January. Roberts married Moder in July 2002 at her home in Taos, N.M. The twins would be the first children for Roberts, who starred in 1990's "Pretty Woman."
People said Roberts' condition wasn't serious, but that her doctors had advised bed rest until her due date.
Grant off the market? ...
Hugh Grant is secretly engaged! At least Star magazine says so.
According to the slick mag, Grant has finally decided to marry his socialite girlfriend, Jemima Khan, with nuptials scheduled for early next year. Star says the push for a proposal came from Hugh's friend -- and gorgeous ex -- Elizabeth Hurley, who informed the affable Englishman that "it was time for him to grow up."
Trouble in rap land ...
Jay-Z and R. Kelly scratched two more dates on their "Best of Both Worlds" tour. The pair, who canceled a concert in Cincinnati earlier this month, pulled out of one date in Milwaukee and another in Hartford this week.
The two stars have been dogged by rumors that they aren't getting along. But their spokesman blamed the cancellations on "technical problems." Whatever the trouble is, New York City fans will be happy to hear Jay and Rob just added a third night -- Nov. 1 -- at Madison Square Garden.
P.S.: Contrary to a Chicago Sun-Times report, R. Kelly never had an onstage bit where he wore a prison uniform while simulating sex with two women. He was actually wearing a red silk robe. In any case, the singer, who is facing child pornography charges, has cut that shtick from the act.
Jolie in the Sudan...
Angelina Jolie, visiting refugee camps in Sudan this week, said "This is the worst situation I have seen," as a United Nations goodwill ambassador who has visited 20 countries.
"What is going on here and what happened to the women is just unbelievably horrible," she said. During her three-day visit, Jolie traveled to refugee camps and met with aid groups, U.N. agencies and African Union troops.
She said an officer from the African Union troops monitoring the situation in Darfur told her that a village had been raided and destroyed. Jolie also said she was told of a woman and her 12-year-old daughter who were raped repeatedly last week.
Jolie said such accounts are "shocking and horrifying and showed very clearly that there is no stability yet."
