An apologetic Diarllo M. Renford was sentenced Thursday to 15 years in prison for stabbing the mother of his newborn son and her daughter nearly a year ago.

State Supreme Court Justice Joseph S. Forma noted doctors considered it "a medical miracle" that both Rhonda Britt, 29, and her 12-year-old daughter survived the Nov. 24 attack.

The judge cited what he called "the grievous wounds" to both victims as he ignored the pleas of Renford's attorney, Thomas J. Eoannou, for a prison term of no more than 12 years due to what he called Renford's untreated emotional problems.

Eoannou stressed that Britt and her daughter have regularly visited Renford, 31, in the Erie County Holding Center, but the judge and prosecutors, Christopher J. Belling and Deputy District Attorney Frank A. Sedita III, cited a letter to the judge from female relatives of the victims denouncing Renford.

The prosecutors said Renford took his newborn son, who was unharmed, from Britt's home and drove off after stabbing her repeatedly and also stabbing her daughter in the stomach. He was arrested about a half hour later in Amherst.
