A Buffalo woman was killed Wednesday afternoon when the van in which she was riding crashed on a ramp to the Kensington Expressway. The driver has been accused of driving drunk, Buffalo police reported.
Heather Fowler, 31, of Norwalk Avenue was pronounced dead at the scene.
Michael J. McHenry, 43, of Barnard Avenue was charged with driving while intoxicated. McHenry was convicted in 1998 of driving while intoxicated in Monroe County.
Police say McHenry, who was driving on a restricted license, was heading home from a court appearance on unrelated traffic charges, when he crashed his van at about 1 p.m. on the Fillmore Avenue ramp to the eastbound Kensington. The passenger side of the van was damaged after it apparently struck a light pole.
Police initially responded to the call of an accident with a possible dead female at 1870 Fillmore Ave. When they arrived, officers found the woman lying beside McHenry's van. McHenry, distraught, was clinging to a fence about 75 feet away, according to reports.
McHenry apparently drove from the accident scene to Fillmore Avenue to summon help.
Police said McHenry had "a strong odor of alcoholic beverage" on his breath and failed three field sobriety tests. He was taken to Erie County Medical Center pending a court order compelling him to submit to a blood alcohol test.
