Harold J. Brand Sr., a former pressman, died Tuesday in the Center for Hospice & Palliative Care, Cheektowaga, after a long illness. He was 90.
Born in Buffalo, one of 11 children, he graduated from Technical High School and worked in a defense plant during World War II. He also was a civilian air raid warden.
Mr. Brand was a pressman in the printing and newspaper industries for more than 50 years, working in the press room at The Buffalo Evening News from 1956 until his retirement in 1978. He worked at Buffalo Color Press before that.
He was a longtime member of Local 261, Graphic Communications International Union.
A movie buff, he often saw three to four movies weekly at area theaters. He also was an avid reader of detective and Western novels.
His wife, Jennie F. Louise Brand, died in 2004.
Survivors include a daughter, Micheline Hice, and a son, Harry, both of Williamsville; three grandchildren; and five great-grandchildren.
A Mass of Christian Burial will be offered at 9:30 a.m. Friday in St. Gregory the Great Catholic Church, 200 St. Gregory Court and Maple Road, Amherst. Burial will be in Mount Calvary Cemetery, Cheektowaga.
