Two men have been arrested for allegedly scamming an elderly woman by posing as contractors, entering her Bridgeman Street home and stealing her belongings, Buffalo police said.

Michael F. Lapesa, 21, of Eastwood Avenue, Angola, and his cousin, Michael Samuel Lapesa, 27, of Roesch Avenue, were charged with burglary and petit larceny.

Northwest District officers said Michael F. Lapesa's father had been performing contract work on the victim's basement.

The cousins arrived at the victim's home at 4:45 p.m. Tuesday and told the woman that Michael F. Lapesa's father had left his tool box inside and insisted on retrieving it.

Police said the victim refused several times, but they eventually entered the home without permission.

According to police reports, Michael F. Lapesa used the phone, while Michael S. Lapesa went room to room, stealing her purse containing $30, her personal checks, Social Security card and identification.

The two were identified in a photo array. Detectives Edward M. Cotter and Timothy McDonald and Officers Anthony McHugh and Timothy Rooney arrested the men at Genesee Street and Transit Road at about 7:55 p.m.
