CAVE-IN TRAPS MAN DOING WATER LINE WORK
BATAVIA -- An Alexander man is in fair condition in Erie County Medical Center, Buffalo, with injuries suffered Monday in a cave-in during excavation to install water lines at a construction site in the Town of Batavia.
Ralph W. Merrill Jr., 53, was trapped for 35 minutes. He suffered pelvic and leg injuries.
A new building is under construction by Duro Steel Corp. on West Main Street Road. Genesee County sheriff's deputies said Merrill apparently entered a newly dug trench to free a sling around a water pipe when a section of the ditch caved in.
HUSBAND IS CHARGED IN WIFE'S BEATING DEATH
ST. CATHARINES, ONT. -- Police have lodged first-degree murder charges against the husband of a woman who died in their Dunblane Avenue residence Sunday night.
Susan Kilby, 39, was pronounced dead at the scene, and an autopsy Monday concluded that she died after being struck with a blunt object, according to Niagara Regional Police, who seized a hammer as possible evidence.
Patrick Kilby, 47, was to appear in the Ontario Court of Justice today.
YOUTH, 16, ARRESTED IN $12,000 STORE THEFT
A 16-year-old youth was arrested Monday for allegedly breaking into a 14th Street store last month and stealing more than $12,000 worth of clothes and shoes.
The teen was charged with burglary, grand larceny, criminal possession of stolen property and criminal mischief. Several accomplices are still being sought.
Police said burglars pried open the front door of 327 14th St. at about 5:30 a.m. Sept. 1 and stole clothes, boots, hats, shoes and shirts. The theft was captured on a surveillance videotape.
