The owners of St. Mary's Apartments in Amherst received the Multifamily Executive Project of the Year award for best reuse of an existing structure.
St. Mary's Apartments, formerly the St. Mary of the Angels motherhouse, is owned by CRS Companies of Amherst and an affiliate of Whitney Capital LLC.
The apartments provide affordable housing to senior citizens. Leases have been signed for 81 of its 101 apartments since the converted complex opened earlier this year, said John "Skip" Cerio, principal of CRS.
The complex's chapel was converted into a community room, and the complex retained architectural details and original woodwork in many locations.
The award was presented by Hanley-Wood Publications, which publishes Multifamily Executive magazine.
About 200 projects were nominated for awards; nine projects received awards, along with two executives.
