BOY'S DEATH BLAMED ON DRUNKEN DRIVER

An 11-year-old boy died Saturday from injuries suffered when he and a friend were struck by a van that police said was driven by drunken driver as they crossed a street near their Queens homes, authorities said.

John Wirta, 50, of Queens, was charged with driving while intoxicated after the Friday night accident in the Flushing section, said Patrick Clark, spokesman for the Queens district attorney.

Wirta's van plowed into Angel Reyes, 12, and Vasean Alleyne, 11, police said. The two boys suffered head trauma and other injuries.

Vasean, who was within a half-block of his home when he was hit, died hours later in New York-Cornell Medical Center, police said.

Wirta was arrested at the scene. His blood alcohol level was 0.13, well above the legal limit of 0.08, according to police.

Angel, who also suffered a punctured lung, was taken to Booth Memorial Hospital in Queens in stable condition.

If convicted, Wirta could face one year in prison.
