Spite the Devil beat West Virginia by a head Saturday in the $250,000 Empire Classic at Belmont Park.
Ridden by Javier Castellano, Spite the Devil covered 1 1/8 miles in 1:50 1/5 over the fast track and paid $32, $11.40 and $9.10 in the race for New York-bred horses three and older.
Spite the Devil, a 4-year-old gelding by Devil His Due, won for the third time in nine starts this year and earned $90,000 for Hardwicke Stable.
West Virginia returned $3.70 and $3.10, and Mr. Determined paid $14.60 to show.
Meanwhile, heavily favored Boston Raider ($3.60) held off a late charge by A Rose for Chris to win the $50,000 Finger Lakes Juvenile, the final stakes race of the year at the Canandaigua track. Pedro Rodriguez rode the winner for trainer M. Anthony Ferraro.
