In the Oct. 10 edition of The Buffalo News there was a letter paying respect to and appreciation for the recently deceased Connie McGillicuddy. It was written by Joe Gusky. Joe was a first baseman and a good left-handed hitter on a baseball team I coached at Kenmore Junior High many years ago. I also played some softball with Connie back in the 1950s and '60s, so I knew him for a long time.
Connie was, in my mind, the perennial Citizen of the Year if the community recognized such services as he rendered to the young. Connie's devotion and efforts on behalf of the youth of the Buffalo area and Canisius High was dedicated, unselfish and exemplary.
Joe Gusky's letter indicates appreciation. It also indicates Joe's good character for having expressed his appreciation, admiration and gratitude for Connie's efforts on behalf of the young. What I remember best and what impressed me the most about Connie McGillicuddy was that he was always a gentleman.
