Drivers won't have to worry about a Delta Sonic car wash making already congested traffic any worse on Main Street in the Village of Williamsville.

Instead of building a car wash, Benderson Development Co. wants to demolish the former offices of Buffalo Cardiology and Pulmonary Associates at the corner of Main Street and Union Road and build a pharmacy and stores.

Plans for a car wash had residents crammed into village hall to air their concerns about traffic jams that the facility might create. The stretch of Main Street between Union Road and Evans Street is more than 30 percent over capacity, according to the Greater Buffalo-Niagara Regional Transportation Council. Even the Amherst Chamber of Commerce -- usually a business cheerleader -- was against the idea.

The land is correctly zoned for either a car wash or stores. However, in both cases Benderson needs the village to grant something called an "exceptional development permit." It's required in cases when structures reach a certain height or exceed a certain number of square feet.

Benderson is proposing a 14,500-square-foot pharmacy -- about the same size as the Eckerd pharmacy Benderson built on Transit Road, near Klein Road, a few years ago. The plans filed with village also call for about 9,700 square feet of additional retail space. The village board next meets at 7:30 p.m. Monday.
