A 24-year-old man arrested Thursday was charged with pistol-whipping and shooting at a man on Box Avenue in August.

Andra Austin, of Monticello Avenue, was charged attempted murder, assault, criminal possession of a weapon and criminal use of a firearm.

Officers said they spotted Austin entering a car in the 1000 block of Genesee Street at about 2:20 a.m. He was seized on Peterson Street after a chase. Officers Chad Maloney and Brendan Kiefer arrested him after a brief struggle.

Ferry-Fillmore District police said the incident occurred at about 5:30 a.m. Aug. 7, when Derold Jamison, age unknown, of Gibson Street, dropped off a friend in the 200 block of Box Avenue and another car rolled up.

According to police reports, the suspect -- who had words with Jamison at a bar earlier -- got out of the car and began threatening Jamison. The gunman then beat the victim with a black semiautomatic, then began shooting at him before leaving. At the time, he was treated in Erie County Medical Center for his injuries.
