Office Depot, the second-largest office-supplies retailer, plans to open as many as 140 stores in the Northeast by the end of 2006 to gain share in a market dominated by larger rival Staples Inc.

The company is opening 40 stores in the Northeast this year and plans to add another 100 over the next two years, said Rick Lepley, executive vice president.
