ADJUSTING INSURANCE CAN LEAD TO CONFUSION

Many of my patients are confused about their new insurance coverage under Blue Cross Blue Shield. When they call and ask if we are participants, they are correctly told that we do participate with Blue Cross Blue Shield but not with Community Blue. When they arrive in our office, we find that their "Traditional Blue" plans require use of the Community Blue physician panel. There is also confusion in the Blue Cross Blue Shield offices. One of my patients spoke to three different people before someone informed her that her plan required Community Blue physicians.

I strongly advise people with a new policy to determine if their physicians are actually included under the new plan. Articles published by The News during the summer related to the Erie County and City of Buffalo insurance negotiations stated that there would be little if any effect on patients. I think that having to seek a new physician is a significant effect.
