Virginia E. Payne, a former AM&A's sales clerk and nanny, died Wednesday in ElderWood Health Care at Lakewood after a long illness. She was 89.
Born Virginia Alvord in Buffalo, she was a graduate of Bennett High School. She worked as a sales clerk at AM&A's department store at the University Plaza during the 1960s and '70s.
Later, she worked for British Nanny Service as a caregiver until her retirement in 1987. She was a resident of ElderWood Health Care at Lakewood for seven years.
Mrs. Payne was a member of Christian Missionary and Alliance Church, where she was active for 40 years.
She was known for quoting biblical passages and for making people laugh with her natural sense of humor.
Her first husband, Alvin J. Graver, died in 1959.
Survivors include four daughters, Jo Ann Clark and Patricia Oakes, both of Deltona, Fla., Lois Leibold of Blasdell and G. Frances Graver of Buffalo; a son, Peter Graver of Deltona; seven grandchildren; and seven great-grandchildren.
A celebration of Mrs. Payne's life will be held at 4 p.m. Friday at the home of a granddaughter at 3885 Allendale Parkway, Blasdell. Burial will be in Forest Lawn.
