MANSLAUGHTER PLEA ENDS TRIAL IN FATAL SHOOTING

Dameon Renfro pleaded guilty Wednesday to a reduced charge of first-degree manslaughter in the fatal shooting of William Wells almost three years ago.

Renfro, 24, who was captured in South Carolina late last year, accepted the plea deal as the first prosecution witness was about to be called in a jury trial before Erie County Judge Shirley Troutman.

Renfro admitted he intentionally shot Wells, 29, of Strauss Street, as he sat in a parked car on Titus Street on Jan. 6, 2002. The judge told him she will consider a 15-year prison term rather than the maximum 25-year sentence he could get on his manslaughter plea.

Renfro was sent back to jail, pending his Jan. 5 sentencing.
