A 41-year-old Lackawanna man was arrested Wednesday and charged with setting his home on fire while two people were inside, Lackawanna police reported.
Vincent D. Gimbrone, of 24 Seal Place, was charged with arson and reckless endangerment.
Lackawanna police Capt. Ronald Miller said the man called 911 at 5:37 a.m. and stated, "I started my house on fire."
When the dispatcher questioned what he had done, police said, he replied: "You heard me, I started my house on fire, but I put it out."
Miller said firefighters evacuated two people inside the other apartment in the house -- a 20-year-old man and 19-year-old woman.
Firefighters also noticed a strong odor of natural gas inside the home, so the gas was turned off.
Miller said police suspect a propane lighter was used to ignite a couch and blanket in the living room.
Gimbrone later told police that he caused the fire when he was trying to light a cigarette, but police said they found no evidence of that.
