Joseph A. Parco Sr. of Cheektowaga, a retired baseball umpire and golf instructor, died Sunday in Sisters Hospital. He was 93.
Born in Buffalo, he became an umpire in 1940 and officiated throughout the area until 1960, notably at Bemis Park, Buffalo Softball Park and North Fillmore Stadium.
He also taught golf from 1940 to 1980 at golf courses where his brother, Mike, worked as a pro -- Erie Downs, Springville Country Club and Beaver Island. He also operated Union Golf Range in Cheektowaga from 1962 to 1967.
Mr. Parco was a member of the Maryvale Men's Club and the Cheektowaga Travel Club. He was past president of the Bellevue Senior Citizens Club and past president and adviser to the Concerned Senior Citizens of Cheektowaga.
He was commended by the Town of Cheektowaga and Erie County in 1981 for his work with senior citizens.
His wife, Kathryn Allein Parco, died in 1981.
Surviving are his brother, Michael of Las Vegas; a sister, Grace Lombardo of Laguna, Calif.; three grandchildren; five great-grandchildren; and a great-great-grandchild.
Services were today in Amigone Funeral Home, Cheektowaga.
