A Lafayette High School teacher was attacked and knocked unconscious Monday after trying to break up a fight between two girls, Buffalo police reported.
The teacher, Philip S. Raimondo, who attempted to break up the 11:30 a.m. scuffle, was punched in the face by one of the students, a 16-year-old Gibson Street girl.
Raimondo, who was bleeding from the nose, continued to try and separate the girls when the same girl picked up a metal garbage can to throw it. Raimondo deflected it once but was struck in the forehead on a second attempt, causing a deep 3-inch gash in his head and rendering him unconscious.
The girls continued to fight, sliding in Raimondo's blood and ignoring his injuries, according to a school disciplinary report.
Raimondo was taken to Kenmore Mercy Hospital for treatment.
The 16-year-old girl was charged with felony assault and criminal possession of a weapon.
