The Cattaraugus County Sheriff's Department hopes to prevent domestic violence with the theme "It Is Your Business" as part of its October recognition of the 18th annual National Domestic Violence Awareness Month.
Police are asking neighbors, schools and criminal justice, juvenile, public and mental-health personnel to help increase reporting of domestic violence crimes as they occur.
The county participates in the state's Sheriff's Victim Hotline, which provides up-to-date custody status information on offenders with a 24-hour toll-free phone line linking the Sheriff's Department with on-site jail booking systems in the National Communication Center in Louisville, Ky. Crime victims may register for notification at (888) 846-3469.
Registered victims receive automatic calls when an inmate is released or transferred. For information, call Sheriff's Investigator Joe Magiera at 938-9191, Ext. 2334.
