Peggy Lois Spates, a retired teacher's aide in the Buffalo schools, died Friday in Buffalo General Hospital after a long illness. She was 72.
Born in Florence, Ala., she graduated from high school in Sheffield, Ala., and attended Buffalo State College. She worked as a teacher's aide from 1970 until her retirement in 1992.
A Buffalo resident since 1953, she was a member of Durham Memorial AME Zion Church and its Ushers Board. She also was a member of the New York State Church Ushers Association and the William H. Davis Honor Club.
Her husband, Robert A., died in 1998.
Surviving are two daughters, Rhonda Benton of Buffalo and Anna Ruth Bostwick of Florence, Ala.; four sons, John B. White of Dover, Del., Faruk Kaiyum of Rochester and Eric and Marvin, both of Buffalo; 15 grandchildren; and many great-grandchildren.
Services will be held at 11 a.m. Thursday in Durham Memorial AME Zion Church, 174 E. Eagle St., after viewing at 10. Burial will be in Forest Lawn.
