EX-FIRE COMPANY OFFICIAL ARRAIGNED ON THEFT COUNT

Alana M. Jacobs, the former treasurer of the Allegany Indian Reservation Volunteer Fire Department, remained free Tuesday after pleading not guilty to stealing more than $3,000 in department funds.

In a case marked by the guilty plea in June of Herbert "Junior" Dowdy Jr., former president of the department, Cattaraugus County Judge Larry M. Himelein allowed Jacobs, 33, of Merden Street, Salamanca, to remain free following her arraignment.

Cattaraugus County District Attorney Edward M. Sharkey said Jacobs, who had been arrested with Dowdy last March on allegations involving the theft of more than $45,000, is charged with one count of third-degree grand larceny.

On June 21, Dowdy pleaded guilty to fourth-degree grand larceny and attempted criminal mischief and was sentenced Sept. 20 to five years' probation and 200 hours of community service. He also was ordered to make restitution.
