ON THIS DAY -- In 1781, British troops under Lord Cornwallis surrendered at Yorktown, Va., as the American Revolution neared its end. . . . In 1812, French forces under Napoleon Bonaparte began their retreat from Moscow. . . . In 1864, Confederate Gen. Jubal A. Early attacked Union forces at Cedar Creek, Va.; the Union troops were able to rally and defeat the Confederates. . . . In 1950, United Nations forces entered the North Korean capital of Pyongyang. . . . In 1960, the United States imposed an embargo on exports to Cuba covering all commodities except medical supplies and certain food products. . . . In 1987, the stock market crashed as the Dow Jones Industrial Average plunged 508 points, or 22.6 percent in value. . . .

ANNUAL EVENT -- St. Stephen's Holy Name Society will hold its annual spaghetti dinner from noon to 6 p.m. Sunday in the school cafeteria, 2080 Baseline Road, Grand Island. The menu of spaghetti and meatballs, salad, bread, dessert and coffee or tea will cost $6 for a full portion for adults and $3 for a small portion for children ages 6 to 12. NEW PLACE -- Lionel Nosenchuck sent word that the Northside Writers Club is now holding its twice-a-month meetings in Ascension Lutheran Church, 4640 Main St., Amherst. "We meet at 7 p.m. on the first and third Thursday of each month," he wrote.

He said the club, which has been meeting continuously since 1990, welcomes "people of all ages and backgrounds. We are interested in anything people have written. We discuss fiction, non-fiction, poetry, articles and memoirs.
