A Mass of Christian Burial for Norman E. Filipiak, a retired welder, was offered today in the chapel of Our Lady Help of Christians Catholic Church, Cheektowaga, following prayers in Urban-Amigone Funeral Home, .
Mr. Filipiak died Friday in Hospice Buffalo, Cheektowaga, after a long illness. He was 76.
Born in Sloan, he served in the Army in 1946-47 and was based in Guam. He was a 1945 graduate of Sloan High School.
Mr. Filipiak worked 20 years as a welder at Buffalo Forge, retiring in 1992.
After retiring, he moved to Sebring, Fla., and returned to Lancaster recently.
He was a member of Veterans of Foreign Wars and American Legion posts in Avon Park, Fla. He also enjoyed fishing, hunting and golfing at his cottage on Honeoye Lake.
Survivors include his wife of 56 years, the former Jean Schwartz; three daughters, Gloria Moltrup and Mary Ellen, both of Depew, and Janet Farleo of Cheektowaga; a son, Norman of Depew; a brother, Raymond of Depew; eight grandchildren; and eight great-grandchildren.
