Mattie M. Best, a seamstress and a piano player for church services, died Thursday in ElderWood Health Care Center, Cheektowaga, after a lengthy illness. She was 85.
Born Mattie Dupree in Sylvester, Ga., she came to Buffalo in the mid-1960s and worked as a seamstress for several years in a nursing home.
The mother of five, she learned to play piano in her youth, accompanying church services in Georgia. In Buffalo, she played for services at Promised Land Baptist Church and State Tabernacle Church of God in Christ.
A longtime member of State Tabernacle Church, she taught Sunday school classes and was a mother of the church.
In addition to sewing and playing the piano, she enjoyed going on picnics with family and friends.
She was the widow of William E. Best.
Surviving are three daughters, Dolores Dingle, Mildred Miles and Susie Best Brown, all of Buffalo; 30 grandchildren; 15 great-grandchildren; and eight great-great-grandchildren.
Services were held today in State Tabernacle Church, Buffalo. Burial will be in Sylvester.
