MAN SENTENCED TO YEAR FOR PUNCHING GIRLFRIEND

A Niagara Falls man who repeatedly punched his pregnant girlfriend in the abdomen was sentenced Thursday to a year in jail.

County Judge Sara Sheldon Sperrazza imposed the sentence on John Myers, 23, of Walnut Avenue, who had pleaded guilty to third-degree assault for the Sept. 6 incident in Niagara Falls.

Myers originally was charged with felony abortion for allegedly causing his girlfriend to have a miscarriage, but Sperrazza disallowed Myers' confession for legal reasons and the Erie County medical examiner's office changed its opinion on what caused the victim to lose her baby.
