BUFFALO'S DISC HISTORY

NeXt last week received this e-mail (in response to the June 30 story about the Ultimate Frisbee team at Canisius High School) from Keith Armstrong, a former Buffalonian who serves as director of Couples and Family Therapy at the Department of Veterans Affairs in San Francisco.

I recently read the excellent article by Jason Torreano about Canisius High School's Ultimate disc team. I thought your readers might want to know that in 1976 there were at least four high schools in the Buffalo area with Ultimate teams including Nichols, Amherst, City Honors and Canisius. In fact, the University of Buffalo had the first ultimate team in the Buffalo area.

The late Tom Rooney and I founded the Canisius High School team in 1976. There were a number of articles and pictures published during that period in both the Courier Express and the Buffalo Evening News describing ultimate as well as other disc sports. Many of those early players went on to play competitively with colleges and clubs throughout the United States. A couple of those players include World Freestyle Champion John Houck, who continues to play disc sports professionally, and Ross Hammond, who was instrumental in getting a disc golf course in Golden Gate park. Don't underestimate how disc sports can change your life.
