Looking for a good book to read this summer? Why not chill out with "The Golden Compass" by Philip Pullman, the summer choice of The Buffalo News NeXt Book Club?
The first book in Pullman's "Dark Materials" Trilogy, it's a spellbinding fantasy adventure of 12-year-old Lyra and her journey to the North in search of mysterious Dust. She is on a mission to rescue a friend with the help of witches, Gyptians, an armored bear and a balloonist.
This is your chance to read a great book, write a short review and have it published in NeXt. The club's first book, "The Thief Lord" by Cornelia Funke, was popular with readers from elementary school through high school. "The Golden Compass," is available in paperback and at public libraries, where it may be shelved with the adult fiction. The other books in the trilogy are "The Subtle Knife" and "The Amber Spyglass."To be part of the NeXt Book Club, all you do is read the book, write your review (100 to 150 words maximum) and e-mail it to firstname.lastname@example.org by Aug. 30.
