Helen Justyk, formerly active in the local Foster Grandparents Program and the Center for Young Parents, died Saturday in Niagara Falls Memorial Medical Center after a short illness. She was 91 and had been a patient in Schoellkopf Health Center for about a year and a half.
She was born Helen Plewniak in Niagara Falls, where she attended local schools.
Mrs. Justyk worked at the former Kimberly-Clark Corp. plant here before joining the Niagara Falls School District as a custodian, a job she held from 1957 to 1976. She worked primarily at Niagara Street School.
After her retirement, Mrs. Justyk volunteered with the Health Association of Niagara County, which operates the Foster Grandparents and Young Parents programs. She helped many young families during a 20-year period that ended in 1999.
Her husband of 38 years, Edward M., died in 1974.
Survivors include a son, Edward J. of Amherst; a daughter, Cynthia Hanlon of Rochester; four grandchildren; and six great-grandchildren.
A Mass of Christian Burial will be offered at 9:30 a.m. Wednesday in Our Lady of the Rosary Catholic Church, 339 22nd St., following prayers at 9:15 in Labuda Funeral Home, 356 Portage Road. Burial will be in Gate of Heaven Cemetery, Lewiston.
