A man was recovering Saturday in a Queens hospital after cheating death when his van slammed into a 60-foot concrete slab that fell just seconds earlier from an overpass on the Grand Central Parkway, officials said.
Dimitrios Godosis, 46, was in stable condition in the Elmhurst Hospital Center, where he was taken with severe lacerations to his head and right leg following the Friday night crash, officials said. Godosis was headed to work in Manhattan when the accident occurred.
The slab fell from the Steinway Street overpass across the four eastbound lanes of the highway while a DOT contractor, Cal-Tran, was doing work in preparation for the removal of the overpass, Department of Transportation spokesman Tom Cocola said.
The parkway in both directions was shut down after the accident, with the westbound lanes reopened at about 10 a.m. Saturday, Cocola said.
