Ethel M. Goffney, who had owned a Grand Island beauty shop, died unexpectedly July 6 in Sun City, Ariz. She was 83.
Born Ethel Jarrett in Stratford, Ont., Mrs. Goffney was raised in Buffalo. After studying cosmetology and beauty care in New York City, she and her two sisters opened Les Soeurs -- French for "the sisters," -- on Grand Island.
During World War II, she worked as a riveter.
Mrs. Goffney lived in Sun City, Ariz., for the past 15 years and was a member of the Ladies Red Hat Society.
Survivors include her husband of 43 years, Phillip V.; a daughter, Dianne J. Tolerson of Palms, Calif.; five grandchildren; an adopted grandson; and seven great-grandchildren.
A memorial service will be held today at 11 a.m. in St. Christopher's Episcopal Church, 10233 W. Peoria Ave., Sun City, Ariz.
