NEW ORLEANS MAN HELD IN 30-YEAR-OLD SLAYING

A New Orleans man who had hidden from police for more than 30 years after the shooting death of an Amherst Street woman was arraigned before County Judge Sheila A. DiTullio on second-degree murder charges Thursday and held without bail.

James N. Worthey, 55, also known as "Willie F. Wadley" and "Pretty Willie," surrendered to FBI agents in New Orleans on May 21 after authorities in Memphis, Tenn., made inquiries into the old Buffalo case.

Worthey is charged with the April 8, 1974, shooting death of Mary Chatman, 29. Erie County District Attorney Frank J. Clark said that after the shooting, authorities believe Worthey fled on a bus to New York City and went into hiding for three decades.
