On July 13 The Buffalo News ran an article titled "Medical Campus in line for a big boost." In this article it was reported that Kaleida Health was receiving $1.5 million in state grants for investing in its hospital pension plan.
I find this very troubling in that Kaleida has announced that it is closing two child care facilities within the city limits. Kaleida will hold its hand out for grants for "investments" in its pension fund, but will not seek the same funding for qualified child care within the city limits.
William McGuire has been touted for the turnaround of Kaleida Health, but at what cost? Kaleida never met its community obligation in effectively supporting these nationally accredited child care facilities. I hope the next time McGuire asks for state funding for the Kaleida Health Care System, he remembers that his organization has mismanaged its obligation for on-site daycare, and seeks funds for qualified daycare within the city limits.
