DEC. 5, 1919 -- JULY 18, 2004

Dr. John P. Long, a general practitioner for more than 50 years in Buffalo, died Sunday in St. Catherine Laboure Health Care Center after a brief illness. He was 84.

A Buffalo native, Dr. Long graduated from the University of Buffalo School of Medicine and Biomedical Sciences in 1945. After completing his residency at E.J. Meyer Memorial Hospital, he served in the Army from 1946 to 1948, attaining the rank of captain.

Dr. Long entered private practice in Buffalo with Dr. Ross Sandel. He served on the staff of Sisters and St. Francis hospitals for 56 years.

Known for his old-fashioned dedication to patients, he made house calls until he stopped working in June 2002.

"Working for him was a complete joy. His patients always came first," said Mary Fix, a former employee, who, along with her husband, Gary, became close friends with Dr. Long.

A Mass of Christian Burial will be offered at 9:30 a.m. Wednesday in St. Aloysius Catholic Church, 157 Cleveland Drive, Cheektowaga. Burial will be in Forest Lawn.
