EMPIRE CUTS THIRD OF STAFF

Adelphia Communications announced this morning that it is cutting 27 jobs at the Empire Sports Network, and is eliminating the evening program "FAN TV" immediately.

But Empire isn't being totally disbanded, and right now it looks like it will carry the Buffalo Sabres games this season.

That could change if Adelphia is able to sell the regional sports network or partner with someone that might want to change things, said local Adelphia executive Tom Haywood.

The 27 job cuts, necessitated by a reduction in the revenue Empire is getting from cable systems now that it is on some pay tiers, are roughly one-third of the staff.

Among those affected are "FAN TV" anchors Jim Brinson and Bob Trimble. Brinson is leaving Empire to become the morning man at Adelphia's WNSA-FM. Trimble has lost his anchor post but will remain as a reporter.
